Fences stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis took home the leading actor and actress in a play 2010 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall, both thanking God for their good fortune.
“I don’t believe in luck or happenstance,” said Davis. “I absolutely believe in the presence of God in my life.” She also thanked the people in her life “who held me up when I couldn’t hold myself up” and thanked her husband. “I still think God sent his blessings to the wrong house, but I’m gonna take him!” Davis previously won a Tony Award in 2001 for August Wilson’s King Hedley.
“My mother always said man gives you the award and God gives you the reward,” first-time winner Washington shared in his speech. “I guess I got both tonight.” Washington also thanked his longtime wife Paulette in the audience and his children watching from home, adding, “Go to bed!”
